Judith Leyster, 1609-1660, painter Judith Leyster was born in Haarlem, Netherlands in 1609. Her Self-Portrait (above) is actually in the National Gallery of Art, in D.C.! However, this work marks a historical shift from the rigidity of earlier, more formal self-portraits painted by female artists. Instead, she sits in a more relaxed and dynamic pose. Compared to the standards of previous Dutch portraits, itââ¬â¢s very casual, which was nearly unheard of during the Renaissance. Leyster was the daughter of a brewer and was the first Renaissance artist to paint scenes of home, family, and domestic scenes. She also was one of the first painters to begin introducing light sourced in her paintings, such as in The Proposition (1631). Judith Leyster got married in 1636, to another artist who worked with similar subjects. Together, they had 5 kids, but only 2 made it to adulthood. They also moved back to Amsterdam for 11 years, looking for better economic prospects. However, they eventually moved back to the Haarlem area, though. She exemplified the growing independence of women during the Renaissance because she painted the most before marriage and having children. This could also be an example of how marriage can limit the expression and personality of a woman, especially in the 17th century. However, Judith Leyster was very bright and clever, in fact, her signature was a ââ¬Å"JLâ⬠followed by a star. It was a play on words. Her last name, ââ¬Å"Leisterâ⬠means ââ¬Å"Lead starâ⬠in Dutch. She was also incredibly innovative almost provocative in her domestic scenes. Four of the participants were older and two were younger than their sibling with schizophrenia. The participants interacted with their siblings on a daily or weekly basis. The researchers used the interview approach which was used to elicit each participantââ¬â¢s thoughts and feelings. Semi-structured interviews allowed the participant to talk about their experiences in a quiet controlled environment. This qualitative method also allows the researcher to gain a deep understanding of how the participants copes having a sibling with schizophrenia. The interviews were recorded and lasted 45-90 minutes in which each participant got to choose the location of the interview. Organ Donation Harry Wilson is one lucky man; even Harry's doctors cannot believe how lucky he is. You see, Harry, at age 54, was dying. He had to have both of his kidneys removed, they were failing and he had been on an organ donation list for the past two years without success. Harry's children were tested for compatibility but without success. Harry's own brothers and sisters were tested for compatibility but still no success. Now you may ask, how in the world could anyone consider Harry Wilson lucky? Well Harry Wilson got married about three years ago to Mary Smith. It was a second marriage for both and they obviously loved each other very much. But that was only a small part of Harry's luck. The doctors decided to test Mary for compatibility and it was a complete match. In fact, the doctors could not believe that two people, who were related by marriage only, could have such a perfect blood and tissue match. Consequently, the surgery was scheduled. Harry's two kidneys were removed and replaced by one of Mary's kidneys. Now they both have one kidney apiece and both are doing very well living together in Cadillac, Michigan. After the surgery, the doctors told Harry that he would never have received an organ donation in time. Yes, Harry Wilson is one very lucky guy. Organ failing deaths can decrease if more organ donations are made. Modern medicine has altered the definition of death and made the barrier between life and death less clear. It used to be that one was pronounced dead when their heart stopped beating and they had stopped breathing. Death today is defined not by heart beats and respiration but rather by one's brain waves. Doctors measure these brain waves with machines known as EEG machines. When an EEG shows a flat line, this means that the patient's brain is dead. Brain death is when the brain has stopped maintaining controls of all other bodily functions. Advances in technology have now made it possible to maintain respiration and circulation artificially in persons who are considered dead so that their organs can be removed and used to save someone else's life (Landau). This technology is called artificial life support systems. Life support systems are used on patients with brain function when the physician is actively treating the patient. They are also used or continue to be used for organ dona tion when the patient has become brain dead. Society struggles with the understanding that when someone is brain dead and being maintained on life support systems that allow their heart's to beat and their breathing to continue, that patient is never coming back. The conflict in the definition of death arises when the opportunity of organ donation is presented. Throughout the nation, there are not enough transplantable organs to go around. Statistics show that the majority of people in the United States are willing to donate their organs upon death, and even more indicated their willingness to donate organs of a loved one if they know that was their wish. More than half of the eligible donors refuse to donate their recently decreased family member's organs because they don't know how the decreased felt about organ donation (MacPherson). In June of 1998 there were fifty-nine thousand nine hundred fifty-four patients across the nation waiting for an organ transplant and last year nineteen thousand nine hundred sixteen patients actually received transplants (Frei). Unfortunately less than one-fifth of the American people actually sign donor cards (Fentiman). Every 18 minutes another person is added to the waiting list. (Frei). In the four days a high school student is given to research organ donation forty people died waiting for organs, but w hy? Many myths are associated with organ donation. Myths on organ donations are created due to lack of knowledge. The most apparent difference between Dracula and Nosferatu is that one was made while film was still without sound-at least dialogue-and the other was not. This difference, though not a revelation in itself, leads to a great number of much more in-depth contrasts that deserve discussion. In making a silent film, a director must rely on sight-and a certain amount of text-to portray to the audience his intended emotional, and intellectual reaction. As a result of this, the director is not able to go into in-depth character development with the same kind of resources as a director of film that is not silent. In the case of Nosferatu, this leads to a very limited number of characters have any kind of depth whatsoever. This is not to say that every character does not have about him or herself a certain image, or that every character does not extract a certain emotion from the audience. It is simply to say that a great number of characters in Nosferatu use only image to achieve their desired effect. For example, in Dracula, if one were to see Dracula walking down the street, an adverse reaction would be somewhat illfounded. Outside of his clothes, Dracula is a normal looking person. In Nosferatu, however, Dracula is more or less a freak. The end result of this is the audience having the same image of Dracula in both movies, one achieved this through extensive dialogue, and one simply through the appearance of a character. Another example, in Dracula, the first character that is given any kind of development whatsoever is Renfield, and throughout the movie, Renfield is transformed first to a blood sucking savage, and then slowly returned to a character with a heart, and a little bit of compassion. However, in Nosferatu, Renfield is already the blood sucking savage, cooped up in the loony bin, eating bugs when the movie starts, and the extent of his role seems to be nothing more than to provide more insight into the nature of Dracula.Perhaps the most interesting contrast between the two movies is that although they are based on the same novel, their story lines do not coincide. This is apparent in the beginning when in Dracula, Renfield is the one who travels to Transylvania, whereas in Nosferatu, John Harker is the one who travels to Transylvania. It is not explicitly clear in Dracula who the owner of the property that Dracula purchases is; however, in Nosferatu, it is clear that John Harker is the own er, and his trip to Transylvainia is for the purpose of selling the property to Dracula.

How Is the Continual Battle of Nature vs Human Technology Represented Essay
Explain how Bradbury uses this story to question humanââ¬â¢s reliance on technology The house was created for the sole purpose of serving mankind. The house cannot save the family, or humans, from the viciousness of a nuclear bomb. By the time the reader is exposed to the house, the owners have been eradicated, ââ¬Å"their images burned on wood in one titanic instantâ⬠. The house continues to make breakfast, have little robotic mice that clean the house, and even read poetry for, essentially, no one. When the story begins, it appears that machinery has triumphed over humans. Humankind might have fallen beneath the powerful nuclear bomb, but technology has not. Furthermore, while the family relied on the house to take care of them, the house does not require them to survive. However, as the story proceeds, the reader watches as the house is attacked by a fire. As the house scrambles to save itself, there is a sense of panic. ââ¬Å"Doors sprang tightly shutâ⬠and ââ¬Å"blind robot faces peered down with faucet mouths gushing green chemicalâ⬠. In the end, the house succumbs to the blaze and crumbles. The only bit of technology remaining is the dying voice of the house, proclaiming the current day to be ââ¬Å"August 5, 2026â⬠. While technology has ultimately lost the battle of survival, humans lost the war long ago. Bradbury uses this story as a warning of just how little technology and nature care for the endurance of humanity. ââ¬Å"Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree, if mankind perished utterly. And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn. Would scarcely know that we were gone. â⬠This is seen throughout the story, as the house continues to function without the aid of the family that owns it. Humans developed this technology to help them, but the technology does not care if humans are around to use its services. Ultimately, Bradbury warns not about the advancement of technology but rather the complete dependence on it. The conveniences that the house provides appear to be beneficial, but in the end are completely useless. Bradbury also points out the lack of ââ¬Å"humanityâ⬠within the machinery of the house. Instead of a family having to cook and clean, the house does it for them. There is no love within the house. While it would require more work, perhaps it would be more meaningful for a family to work together to keep their house running properly. Instead of being a mere house, it would become a home. Techniques Bradbury uses throughout the story? 1)Personification 2)Foreshadowing 3)Suspense 1)The most often used literary technique to describe the house is personification, where you give inanimate objects human-like characteristics. The stove is given human actions, ââ¬Å"In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interiorâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ . This passage shows that Bradbury has given a breakfast stove the ability to hiss a sigh. Stoves are not physically able to sigh. Rain is personified, ââ¬Å"And the rain tapped on the empty house, echoingâ⬠. The rain did not literally tap on the house, it means that the rain was making noise as it fell and came into contact with the house. 2)Bradbury uses is foreshadowing, hinting clues that suggest events that will later happen. The voice-clock sang, worriedly, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ Ticktock, seven oââ¬â¢ clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven oââ¬â¢ clock! As if it were afraid that nobody wouldâ⬠. This shows that the house was sensing something was going to be different today. It foreshadows that something bad may happen. There is a fire in the house, ââ¬Å"Smoke and silence. A great quantity of smoke. ââ¬Å". The silence is foreshadowing that the house has given up and died. Foreshadowing is used by Bradbury to hint later events. 3)Bradbury uses suspense to create an effective story. The dog is injured from the nuclear bomb. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦once huge and fleshy, but now gone to bone and covered with soresâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ . This creates suspense because it makes the reader wonder if the dog is going to survive. When a fire is ablaze in the house. ââ¬Å"The fire burst the house and het it slam flat down, puffing out skirts of spark and smokeâ⬠. It makes the reader wonder what will happen next and how the house is going to result. Suspense is used to build up the excitement of the reader making them want to read on to find out. In conclusion, personification, fore shadowing and suspense are used to create ââ¬Å"There Will Come Soft Rainsâ⬠. Bradbury uses literary elements to make a successful short story.
